Natural Wood Easel with Plastic Bins

Review Date: October 3, 2009

This was a birthday gift for my grandson. I searched until I found this model because I had purchased this easel for my grand daughter (his cousin) 4 years ago and she was delighted with it. The easel has provided many hours of fun and creativity. It is well constructed, sturdy and stable, easy to assemble and a perfect height for a budding artist. The plastic bins are great for storing and give easy access to art materials. The chalk board is difficult to draw and write on and as a result not used as often as the painting side. I would have liked to have more holes for paint pots so the child could choose different colours for his/her masterpiece without having to remove and replace the pots each time a new colour is needed.
love, Love, LOVE this easel

I purchased this easel as a fifth birthday gift for my twins. I ordered it online and was hopeful that it would be as sturdy as described, I was not disappointed - this is one SOLID easel. It's exactly what I hoped for and more. The bins are larger than I anticipated and hold all the copious art and craft supplies of my two little artists with a bit of room to spare. I literally couldn't be happier. The price has increased since I purchased it, but I would have paid the current price as listed (~$[...]) and still been very happy with it.
We Went to the Moon, But Why No Functional Chalkboard?

The easel is sturdy, on the large side, attractive, and has excellent storage. My one gripe is the chalkboard is "waxy," not slate-like, so chalk appears dull even if you write/draw hard. This problem is apparently not unique to the Battat easel, but it's still unacceptable because (1) parents and children expect a functioning chalkboard when you buy an easel with a chalkboard; and (2) how difficult can the fix be?--after all, we've all seen functioning chalkboards in school.
The hit of All Christmas Gifts

This was the best Christmas gift received by my four year old son. He is very artistic and uses it every day. The bins make a great place to store the paint brushes, markers, pencils, and anything else that he thinks is special. The paper roll holder makes it easy for my son to have paper handy for his art projects no matter what his imagination creates. This is an educational tool. My daughter is also learning to draw stick figures using the dry erase board and she is just itsy bitsy!! 5 stars for sure!!

Bad Customer Service

I'm not reviewing the product here as much as I ma the company. The thing was slightly damaged out-of-box... getting support from the manufacturer is proving to be quite a challnge. It's a simple problem easily resolved... but their support and assembly instructions are sub-par.
great but...

its a very great easel. Wooden is the best. Only issue I had was that one of the metal screws broke! I had to screw in a wooden piece in a different location. I had never seen screws so cheap that they break!

When inserting the paper, you have to push up the chalk bin, insert paper and put the chalk bin down in order to hold the paper - i accidentally figured this out. I wish it was mentioned. Although on the top side, there is nothign to hold the paper down, so its easy to pull it down - not a good idea in the middle of your work. I wish you could put clips on top.

Finally, they don't provide paper roll. Melissa and Doug rolls dont cover the entire width of the easel.

Worst of all, the easel paper shipping costs as much as the paper, which is not available in any stores (I tried all - ToysRUs, Target, Walmart, etc)

Best Easel

My son received this easel for his second birthday and we all love it. It's very durable, and the size is just right (although my son sometimes stands on a stool to draw or paint). It's heavy enough that it won't move around while he's using it, but light and small enough for us to move it to a different space when needed. The bins are great for storing all of his art supplies--we haven't even filled them all yet. Paint cleans off of the wood very easily with a wet cloth. It does also hold a roll of paper (I think this point is missing from the product description). The only thing missing from this easel is that neither the dry erase nor chalk board is magnetic. But that is a minor complaint. Overall this is fabulous easel and worth every penny.
Best Child's Easel on the Market!

Our son was able to break his previous easel made by Imaginarium, so when trying to replace it, we did lots of research. This one definitley holds up to our 2 year old, and it looks very nice in our home. The baskets keep art supplies neat & handy. This is such a great easel that more of our family & friends have ordered it as well. Highly recommend!
Great Investment

I have searched far and wide for the perfect easel for my kids. This easel has it all. It's very easy to assemble, sturdy, has ample storage, and is just a very nice piece of furniture. The only drawback is that it isn't height adjustable. I bought it for my two yr old who is 3'2" and he can use the full drawing area. A smaller toddler wouldn't at first, but hey, they grow. I know our children will get years and years of good use out of this product. I'm very happy with this investment.
Awesome product and service!

Easel is sturdy, made out of solid wood. Bins that sit underneath are holding all of our daughter's art supplies, including coloring books!
She is only three and a half and very little, so we just use a stool. The easel is outside on our deck, covered with a nice blanket.
When it arrived, one of the trays was damaged and since it was sent by Target and not Amazon, we would have had to send the entire easel back (80lbs!) to Amazon.(from Hawaii)
So we decided to keep it. Amazon gave us a credit for half the return shipping cost and we contacted Battat to see, if we could purchase the damaged tray. They are going to send us a new tray!
So, excellent product with excellent service throughout from Amazon and Battat!

The Art Easel with Bins was an impulse purchase, which is atypical for me. As one who adores art, I try to encourage my son to take an interest in drawing, and painting. When I saw this awesome easel I couldn't pass it up. That was over two years ago, and this piece of "furniture" still looks new!

There isn't enough space in my son's bedroom to place this easel at an angle so that he can choose a side to work. Thus, the chalkboard faced out. This became awkward when William wanted to use the marker board side, or when a friend came to play. The easel is quite bulky, and too heavy to move. A young child cannot lift this easel, nor should they try. Consequently, I bought casters with the intent of screwing them into the legs. Unfortunately, the legs are not thick enough for casters. I'd have to build out the legs in order to make it work, and I haven't found the time for that. Thus, the Art Easel with Bins easel currently lives in the backyard under a covered patio. I found a large, insulated tablecloth to cover it when not in use, and this arrangement works much better for us. William can use his easel whenever he wants, and I don't have to worry about turning it around, and scratching up the bedroom walls. In addition, I'm not concerned about paint splattering all over his bedroom, or chalk dust flying every which way.

If you choose to purchase the Art Easel with Bins, make sure you have the room for it. It's superior quality from what I've seen, and the bins are an extra bonus! They slide out easily, and store lots of supplies. The easel cleans up effortlessly. All I do is wipe it down with water and a rag after a painting session. The paint comes right off. The finish looks new, and that's saying a lot considering it lives outside with our extreme temperatures in Phoenix.

If you have a budding artist, consider the Art Easel with Bins by Battat. It'll live longer than it's owner.
